History
The history of Reyka Small Batch Vodka dates back to 2005 when it was founded by a group of passionate distillers who sought to create a vodka that truly represents the unique character of Iceland. The founders were inspired by the country’s natural beauty and elemental resources, aiming to craft a vodka that showcased the purity of Icelandic water and the authentic flavors derived from local grains. They established the distillery in Borgarnes, a picturesque town known for its stunning landscapes and pristine environment. Reyka’s production methods honor a commitment to traditional distillation techniques while incorporating modern innovations, leading to a spirit that reflects the balance of nature and craftsmanship. Through the years, Reyka has garnered numerous awards, testament to its commitment to quality and the art of vodka production.
Fabrication Process
The fabrication of Reyka Small Batch Vodka begins with careful selection of high-quality ingredients, specifically Icelandic barley and wheat. The process starts with the mashing and fermentation of these grains, which converts the starches into sugars suitable for distillation. Once the fermentation is complete, the liquid is distilled in a traditional copper pot still, a method that is crucial for developing its clean profile. Each distillation cycle takes approximately six hours, producing a limited quantity of just 255 cases to ensure exceptional quality in every batch. Unlike many other vodkas, Reyka is also distilled using geothermal energy, taking advantage of Iceland’s natural geothermal resources, making its production uniquely sustainable. Finally, before bottling, Reyka undergoes a filtration process through ancient lava rocks, imparting both purity and an added distinctive flair to the finished spirit.
