History
The Bruichladdich Distillery was established in 1881 on the Scottish island of Islay, a region renowned for its distinctive whisky traditions. The Classic Laddie represents a bold departure from the heavily peated whiskies typically associated with Islay, providing an alternative that showcases the versatile possibilities of Scotch whisky. This expression is a reflection of the distillery’s philosophy to celebrate locality and integrity, emphasizing the use of Scottish barley and local water. The intention behind The Classic Laddie was to create a whisky that is dynamic, floral, and characterized by an elegant complexity, capturing the spirit of Islay in a unique and playful manner.
Fabrication Process
The production of Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie begins with the careful selection of 100% Scottish barley, which is sourced locally to promote sustainable practices. The barley undergoes malting, where it is soaked in water and allowed to germinate, activating the enzymes necessary for fermentation. After drying in kilns, the malted barley is milled into grist, which is then combined with water in a mash tun to extract fermentable sugars. Following the mashing process, yeast is added to the wort in fermentation vessels, transforming sugars into alcohol over a period of 48 to 72 hours.
After fermentation, the resulting wash is distilled in Bruichladdich’s traditional pot stills, where it is distilled slowly and meticulously to capture the desired flavors and purity. The spirit produced is then transferred to premium American oak casks for maturation, where it develops its complex character over time. The Classic Laddie is non-chill filtered, a technique that preserves the full flavor profile of the whisky, and is bottled at an inviting 50% ABV, ensuring a robust drinking experience.
