History
The origins of Beefeater London Dry Gin trace back to 1863 when pharmacist James Burrough acquired the Chelsea Distillery in London. His vision was to create a gin that would embody the essence of London, and through rigorous dedication to quality and craftsmanship, he succeeded remarkably well. By using traditional methods and refining the recipe, Burrough laid the foundation for what would become an iconic spirit. The name ‘Beefeater’ is believed to have been inspired by the Yeomen of the Guard, the royal bodyguards, reflecting its British heritage. Through the years, Beefeater remained committed to its London roots, being one of the few major gin brands distilled in the city itself. Over the decades, the gin has undergone innovations while maintaining its classic recipe, consistently appealing to both traditionalists and modern palates alike.
Fabrication Process
The production of Beefeater London Dry Gin begins with a careful selection of nine key botanicals: juniper berries, angelica root and seeds, coriander seeds, almonds, licorice, and the peels of Seville oranges. The gin is crafted in traditional pot stills, specifically designed to capture the essence of these botanicals effectively. The process starts with the maceration of the botanicals in a neutral grain spirit for 24 hours, allowing their flavors to infuse into the spirit. After maceration, the mixture is distilled, which extracts and concentrates the desired flavors. This distillation is conducted in small batches to ensure consistency and high quality. After distillation, the gin is carefully blended to achieve the traditional Beefeater profile before being bottled at an alcohol content of 40% ABV. The entire process, from selection to distillation, is executed with precision, reflecting the distillery’s commitment to authenticity and excellence.
