The Black Barrel was launched to offer a richer and deeper flavor profile, lovingly cultivated through the innovative practice of charring the barrels not just once, but twice. This allowed for enhanced caramelization of the wood sugars, resulting in a more complex trilogy of flavors that are fundamental to the Black Barrel experience.
Fabrication Process
The production of Jameson Black Barrel begins with the careful selection of premium grains, primarily a combination of malted and unmalted barley. This grain mixture is mashed and then fermented using natural yeast to develop an initial wash. Following fermentation, the wash is distilled in pot stills, which is crucial in retaining the depth of flavor characteristic of Jameson. What sets Black Barrel apart is the aging process; the whiskey is matured in specially treated ex-bourbon barrels, which are charred not once, but twice. This dual charring process draws out deeper flavors from the wood and enhances the whiskey’s overall smoothness. After an average maturation period of about four years, the whiskey is meticulously blended to ensure consistency and the signature taste that Jameson is renowned for.
